Wyre Council Launches Wyre Moving More

4th of July, 2024

Wyre Council delivered the launch of the new Wyre Moving More strategy alongside key stakeholders and partners from across Wyre last week at Highbury Stadium, Fleetwood, home of Fleetwood Town Football Club.

The strategy has been developed by a cross-sector partnership of experts from health, local government, higher education, schools and the charity sector to address the issue of combating physical inactivity.

Working together with Lancashire County Council, UCLAN, Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board, Active Lancashire, Wyre and Fylde School Sports Partnership, local Primary Care Networks, Fleetwood Town Community Trust and Fylde Coast YMCA, Wyre Council is looking to strengthen the connections between sport, physical activity and health and wellbeing.

Local rates of inactivity are above both regional and national levels with 32% of adults and 26% of children and young people in Wyre being classed as inactive. The Wyre Moving More strategy aims to change this.

It is a five-year physical activity strategy for Wyre, which aims to embed a culture of ‘moving more’ and thereby increase physical activity levels across communities in Wyre. It states the ambitions of the Wyre Moving More Project Board, a cross-sector multi-agency initiative facilitated and led by Wyre Council and sets out the collective long-term commitment to, ‘help Wyre residents feel healthier, happier and better connected to their communities through physical activity.’

The launch event was attended by approximately 100 local stakeholders and partners showcasing the amazing collaborative approach across Wyre on this vitally important campaign. Rebecca Huddleston, Chief Executive of Wyre Council, opened the event and thanked attendees for their commitment to help deliver the strategic aims of Wyre Moving More and achieve the vision of success for the future.

Rebecca Huddleston, Chief Executive of Wyre Council states, “It is so important to work together with our influential partners on this ambitious strategy and really drive and embed a culture of moving more across our communities in the borough. I’m committing to the campaign by making ‘my move’ and joining in with regular fitness classes and enjoying more parkruns.”

Attendees heard from many local stakeholders including Paul Blythin, Director Health and Skills at Active Lancashire; John Hartley, CEO of Fleetwood Town Community Trust; Sean McGann, Head Coach at Fleetwood Amateur Boxing Club; Rob Larcombe, Executive Director at Healthy Heads Education and Anne Mullins, Leisure Centre Manager at Fylde Coast YMCA. The stakeholders delivered important talks on how they can contribute to the Wyre Moving More strategy and how they can help to influence and encourage their own networks to get involved in the strategy and commit to helping the community to move more.

Wyre Council are now building a network of professionals, groups and organisations that provide opportunities to get everyone in Wyre moving more to become official Wyre Moving More partners. They’re looking for people who can promote and encourage residents to be more active in Wyre as well as connect with those delivering in the sport, activity and wellbeing industries. If you or anyone you know might be interested, please register your interest to become an official partner. Visit www.wyremovingmore.co.uk to learn more and register online.

Be part of the movement! Wyre Council will be encouraging everyone in Wyre to commit to moving more, with a dedicated Wyre Moving More campaign due to launch to the public this summer.  The Council want to be able to help people understand the importance of moving more and how this has a multitude of benefits for health and wellbeing. The Wyre Moving More campaign will showcase that any physical activity is good, whether that is via a structured physical activity class, playing team sports, or simply walking the dog or playing with their children at home in the garden.
